Water Additives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Food can play a big part in\u00a0helping with your pet&#8217;s\u00a0plaque and tarter build-up.\u00a0 Feeding dry food, instead of just wet or soft food, can act as a toothbrush as your pet chews the hard kibbles. \u00a0Soft food, on the other hand, doesn&#8217;t give your furry friend that abrasive action that helps &#8220;brush&#8221; their teeth. \u00a0Larger kibble food is recommended (even with small dogs) to encourage them to chew more than with smaller kibble. \u00a0There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillspet.com\/en\/us\/products\/pd-canine-td-dry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">veterinary prescribed dental pet foods<\/a> (available for felines as well).\u00a0 Consult your veterinarian to see if a specially designed dental pet food would be good for your pet.<\/p>\n<p>There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vohc.org\/accepted_products.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many types of treats<\/a> designed to help with tartar and plaque build-up.\u00a0 These treats can be found in pet stores and your local veterinarian offices.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian first before deciding on a dental treat as there are many varieties and your pet may need or respond to a brand\/type better than another.\u00a0 Taking a look at products recommended by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vohc.org\/AcceptedProductsTable.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)<\/a> is a good start.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virbacvet.com\/products\/detail\/c.e.t.-aquadent-drinking-water-additive\/rinse-and-water-additives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Water additives<\/a> are another group of products that may help with your pet&#8217;s oral health; be aware that the success rate isn&#8217;t entirely clear. <em>\u00a0If you would like to try a water additive we recommend putting out two\u00a0water bowls<\/em>.<em> \u00a0One with the additive and another without (especially if you have a cat).<\/em> \u00a0This way, if your pet doesn&#8217;t like the additive they will still have access to fresh water.<\/p>\n<p><b>Professional<\/b><strong>\u00a0Cleaning:<br \/>\n<\/strong>During your pet&#8217;s annual wellness visit your veterinarian does a general check of the mouth and may recommend a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckeranimalhospital.net\/veterinary-services\/pet-dental-care.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">professional cleaning<\/a>. \u00a0A professional cleaning is generally done while your pet is under anesthesia.\u00a0 They will get a thorough cleaning from a veterinarian technician and a full oral exam from the veterinarian. \u00a0A professional cleaning is important to prevent dental disease from getting out of control.\u00a0 For some pets with minimal dental disease and tolerant behavior;
